Objective
To train professionals with the knowledge, skills, aptitudes, and attitudes necessary to effectively, efficiently, quality, and economically develop the activities inherent to the different processes involved in the exploitation of hydrocarbons, water, and geothermal energy (drilling, production, reservoirs and well services), which are indispensable resources for the development of the country. This directs the teaching of petroleum engineering towards the development of the capacities, skills, and attitudes of future professionals in the aforementioned competencies.
Candidate's Profile
In general, students entering the Petroleum Engineering career at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional must have the basic knowledge and skills of the previous level, which guarantee an adequate performance. Likewise, they must have the necessary attitudes and values to take responsibility for their formative process and assume an active position in the study and development of the projects and work required, coinciding with the ideology and principles of the institution.

- Higher Secondary Education, preferably in the field of engineering and physical-mathematical sciences.
- Basic knowledge that strengthens the capacity for self-training (development of languages and communication skills).

Graduate's profile
The petroleum engineer is a professional who directs processes for obtaining hydrocarbons, water, and geothermal energy and executes and supervises reservoir, drilling, and production operations, for the correct administration of material, human and technological resources applicable to the petroleum, electric, and aquifer exploitation industries. Showing an entrepreneurial attitude for the benefit of economic, social, and environmental development.

Hydrocarbon exploitation:
- Exploit oil and aquifer prospects.
- Rationally quantify hydrocarbon reserves.
- Analyze information to define the type of fluids contained in the reservoirs.
- Analyze the information on the pressures present in the reservoir.
- Defining the type of reservoirs containing fluids.
- Defining the most efficient and sustainable way to exploit the reservoirs.
- Characterize reservoirs and determine the number of hydrocarbons they contain, predict reservoir behavior through the use of specialized software and methods.
- Scheduling, directing, and supervising work related to drilling, completion, and workover of wells.
- Coordinate the operation of wells already drilled.
- Perform qualitative and quantitative hydrocarbon interpretations.
- Plan and design the necessary stimulations on wells.
- Install artificial production methods as required.
- Organize and verify fluid injection operations in secondary and enhanced recovery and hydrocarbon processes.
- Describe, analyze and interpret information obtained by various means while drilling wells.
- Supervise the correct conduction of hydrocarbons and water from the subsurface to the surface.
- Collect, measure, transport, transport, store, and package the aforementioned resources.
- Maintain and conserve wells, as well as equipment, tools, and materials used in the exploitation.
- Design field development, drilling, surface production equipment, and environmental protection equipment.
- Manufacture surface production equipment.
- Manage drilling, production, and reservoir operations for both hydrocarbons and aquifers.
- Supervise drilling, production, and reservoir services for both hydrocarbons and aquifers.
- Prepare the economic and feasibility analysis of projects related to the exploitation of hydrocarbons and aquifers and direct their start-up.
- Bidding for works carried out by third parties.
- To manage the exploitation of hydrocarbons and aquifers.
- To manage the technology useful for the solution of the priority problems of the industry.
- To optimize the rational exploitation of subsoil water.
- Program, organize, and supervise the drilling of wells, both for irrigation and drinking water.
- Design the completion of wells and develop exploitation areas.
- Intervene in geological and geophysical surveys and studies.
- Provide consulting services to companies and institutions responsible for the exploitation of oil, gas, water, or steam.
- Properly choose the materials and products used in drilling and well-stimulation works, as well as in hydrocarbon treatment and recovery processes, to establish their correct application and evaluation of results.
