In addition to promoting cycling, the new space functions as an air quality laboratory and a water and energy harvesting hub

To encourage cycling and physical activity, the Unidad Profesional Interdisciplinaria de Ingeniería y Tecnologías Avanzadas (UPIITA) of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) inaugurated the “Bici Station Hub UPIITA”, benefiting UPIITA’s 4,000-strong community. Beyond serving as a mobility space, the new hub operates as a living laboratory equipped with sensors that measure fine particles (PM1, PM2.5, and PM10), continuously monitoring air quality and updating data every five seconds on variables such as temperature, humidity, and dew point in Mexico City and the State of Mexico.

During the inauguration, Miguel Félix Mata Rivera, coordinator of UPIITA’s graduate programs in Artificial Intelligence Science and Data Science, explained that the project also features a rainwater collection system with an 80-cubic-meter storage capacity. Using the TlalocBox system, the facility will analyze basic water quality parameters. Additionally, solar panels were installed to generate renewable energy, ensuring the sustainability of the hub.

Mata Rivera added that “BiciHub: Green Data in Motion” is an innovative space for mobility, data science, and experimentation, where students, faculty, and researchers can measure, analyze, and publish open data on air and water quality. The initiative will support research, Big Data, Data Science, and IoT projects, as well as capstone projects in the school’s academic programs.

The project involved students from the Mechatronics, Telematics, and Energy Engineering programs; graduate students in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science; and experts from the laboratories of the Escuela Superior de Cómputo (ESCOM), the Centro de Investigación en Computación (CIC), and UPIITA.

To close the ceremony, the director of UPIITA, Israel Vázquez Yanca, unveiled the plaque of the new green space and living laboratory, which accommodates 40 bicycles and 10 scooters.
