The forum explores feminist mentorship and scientific vocation in higher education.
In recognition of the vital role of women in science, technology, and innovation—and to highlight the importance of support networks as a tool for guidance and solidarity among women—the Politécnica Gender Perspective Management Unit (UPGPG) held the forum titled “Feminist Mentorship and Scientific Vocation: Insights from Experience in Higher Education Institutions.”
At the forum’s opening, Elizabeth Cabrera, Director of UPGPG at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), emphasized that mentors not only serve as catalysts for academic learning, but also as guides who offer solidarity, empathy, and motivation to persevere in fields that have traditionally been male-dominated.
To strengthen mentorship across the IPN, Cabrera announced a new training program led by the UPGPG, focused on preparing female facilitators from within the institution’s workforce—women who bring valuable knowledge and experience in women's empowerment.
As part of the forum, a panel discussion brought together representatives from various higher education institutions to share their perspectives on mentorship, and the tools and strategies used to inspire scientific vocations and support women’s persistence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
Gabriela Ortiz from the Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM), Mónica Angulo from the British Council, Cristina Osorio from Universidad Tecnológica de Bolívar in Colombia, and Yohana Castro Bibiano from UPGPG agreed on the importance of nurturing scientific interests from an early age—especially in upper secondary education—building support networks, and ensuring continuity in gender equality policies.
They highlighted the value of academic mentoring, emotional support, and empathy as key elements in breaking down gender roles and stereotypes that distance women from science and other traditionally male-dominated disciplines.
Mauricio Jasso Zaranda attended the forum’s opening ceremony, IPN’s General Secretary; Yessica Gasca Castillo, Secretary for Innovation and Social Integration; Javier Tapia Santoyo, Secretary of Administration; Ismael Jaidar Monter, Academic Secretary; and Yuriria Trejo, Education Officer at UNICEF Mexico.
