Protecting marine biodiversity, promoting sustainable fishing, and curbing plastic pollution are essential actions to preserve the oceans, which play a vital role in regulating the climate, supporting life cycles, and producing oxygen, emphasized Delphine Borione, Ambassador of France to Mexico.
"The waters of our blue planet are full of life, and we have to protect them," stated the ambassador during the opening of the first edition of the “Day of the Stars”, held Thursday at the Juan de Dios Bátiz Historical and Cultural Center, located in the Casco de Santo Tomás of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN).
As part of the event, the “Blue Dialogues” were held under the theme “Ocean Protection: Our Common Good.” These sessions offered attendees the opportunity to learn more about the composition of the oceans and their ecosystems. Participants discovered that marine biodiversity not only sustains communities, but also protects them, provides sustainable energy, and contributes to scientific knowledge.
Tanina Frausto Illescas, a graduate of the National School of Biological Sciences (ENCB), Santo Tomás Unit, and Dr. René Torres Villegas, a researcher at the Center for Research in Marine Sciences (Cicimar), also emphasized the urgent need to conserve, protect, and restore the oceans and their biodiversity. They called for a profound shift in how we utilize natural marine resources.
