OSIPN: 60 Years of Promoting Art Through Music

Presidency of the Decanato

Founded to enrich the education of Polytechnic students through access to music, the Orquesta Sinfónica del Instituto Politécnico Nacional (OSIPN) gave its first concert in Zacatenco on April 4, 1965. This event marked the beginning of a musical legacy that continues to this day.

The OSIPN has played a fundamental role in the comprehensive education of students and in promoting the arts through music. As a testament to its legacy, the Historical Archive of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional preserves a valuable collection that includes audiovisual materials, vinyl records, cassette tapes, compact discs, photographs, hand programs, posters, and other documents that reflect the orchestra's history and cultural contributions.

In celebration of the orchestra’s 60th anniversary, the recording titled "Cultural Presence of the IPN in Russia" is presented. This live-recorded event featured Maestro Salvador Carballeda, director of the OSIPN, representing a milestone in the international projection of the Institute and its orchestra, showcasing the artistic and cultural excellence that the Politécnico has carried beyond national borders. Additionally, the display includes the edition of a commemorative diptych for the 70th Anniversary of the Institute, which not only announced the celebration of the institution’s legacy but also highlighted the evolution and growth of the OSIPN over the years.

Finally, on exhibit is a 45 RPM vinyl record, produced on May 15, 1974, in honor of Teacher’s Day, recorded by the orchestra under the direction of Guillermo Orta Velázquez, the first director of the OSIPN. This recording holds great historical value as it represents one of the ensemble’s earliest official recordings, capturing the essence and artistic level the orchestra had achieved in its formative years.

These sound documents are part of the Artistic Promotion subseries of the audiovisual area of the IPN Historical Archive and are available for consultation.
