Politecnical Identity

Coat of Arms

The initiative to create a distinctive insignia for the emerging IPN was sparked by student interest. Between 1944 and 1945, the National Federation of Technical Students (FNET) launched a contest inviting submissions to design a coat of arms representing the IPN’s member schools. The first prize was awarded to student Armando López Fonseca, with valuable support from his classmate Jorge Grajales. In 1948, the coat of arms was revised to update its design while preserving its core elements.

Motto: "La Técnica al Servicio de la Patria"

This phrase was used by students even before the founding of the IPN. However, it was during the first National Congress of Technical Students held in Chihuahua in 1937 that Jes Robles Martínez, then a student, was elected president of the National Federation of Technical Students (FNET) and proposed a slogan to represent the organization’s ideals. Originally coined as “La Técnica al Servicio de una Patria Mejor,” the slogan was intended to complement the federation’s broader objectives. It was later refined to “La Técnica al Servicio de la Patria,” a phrase that has since come to embody the core values and mission of the IPN.

Anthem of the IPN

During the tenure of General Director Eugenio Méndez Docurro (1959–1962), preparations for the 25th anniversary of the IPN’s founding included a call to create the Institute’s official anthem. Carmen de la Fuente, a teacher and poet (1915–2013), won the lyrics contest. A subsequent competition selected the musical composition, awarded to Armando González Domínguez, a professor of music education at Bellas Artes. The Politécnico Anthem premiered on August 19, 1961, during the 25th anniversary celebration at the new Zacatenco campus, an event attended by then-President Adolfo López Mateos.

History

In 1932, a strategy was developed to integrate and properly structure a comprehensive technical education system.
